A dynamic, exciting, high profile role working on the features desk at Financial News, liaising with sales and editorial to pitch story ideas, writing and commissioning features, editing and overseeing production of reports, putting together and hosting live webcasts, as well as meeting and communicating with high level industry contacts.
The features desk is a small team, each member has ownership of certain projects and areas and is expected to generate ideas across a wide range of subject matter, including FN’s flagship products such as the FN100 lists and events, surveys, roundtables and live broadcast webinars. Financial News is part of the global media organisation Dow Jones so there is plenty of scope for career development. This is an exciting time to join the special reports desk, as we are rapidly expanding our calendar of live webcasts, web events and lifestyle coverage.
Key tasks:
• Commissioning and editing special reports published in print and online in Financial News
• The editor will work closely with and deputise for the executive editor and features editor. (Special reports are loosely defined as any editorial output beyond the day-to-day operations of the news teams at FN)
Key responsibilities:
• Generating ideas for new special reports and articles within FN special reports
• Liaise with senior editors and managers across Dow Jones, as well as freelancers
• Liaising with advertising sales staff
• Commissioning for FN special reports
• Working closely with the special reports team on ideas for webcasts and audiocasts, research and inviting panelists and hosting broadcasts
• Timely production of synopses or other relevant materials to support the sales team
• Editing and production of special reports for FN
• Oversight of digital aspects of special reports
• Acting as an editorial ambassador for Financial News
Skills/experience required:
• Excellent writing skills
• Excellent editing skills
• Commissioning to a high standard
• Managing an editorial team/ freelancers to deadline
• Managing the design and production of newspapers and/or magazines
• Understanding of commercial operations of newspapers and/or magazines including dealing with advertising sales
• Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with senior individuals internally across diverse business lines/functions
• Meeting and liaising with external senior executives / high profile individuals
• Broad knowledge of finance/business
• Track record in generating ideas and pitching stories
Educational Level/professional qualifications (minimum requirement):
• Degree or equivalent professional qualification; at least seven years journalistic experience including at least three years in an editing role.
