Job Title: News Sub-Editor
Reports to: Ian Pickering, Night Editor
Department: News Subs
Key purpose of the job: Sub-edit and re-write news stories for the paper – encompassing politics, showbiz, business, science, tech, crime, human interest, quirky and more.
Key Responsibilities:
Produce accurate, compelling, interesting stories with catchy headlines which are relevant to our readership
Skills & Competencies
The ability to unravel wire copy and rewrite a story from top to bottom to make it draw in the reader and top it off with a good headline. It is not a job where you simply top and tail a story
Produce high quality work even under tight deadline pressure
Proven proof reading and fact checking skills
Posses a general knowledge base that suits a paper which has the youngest readership of all the nationals
Good knowledge of Adobe InCopy and (preferably) Adobe InDesign
Strong team player
Highly creative
Flexible approach to changes and workload
Great communicator
Attitude
An enthusiastic, good-humoured person with a love of the English language who can work well within a small team and is always keen to learn and improve
Emotional resilience
Experience/ Qualifications:
Ideally a sub-editor with experience of subbing news on a national newspaper or a chief/deputy chief sub at a large regional paper looking to make the step up to the nationals
Additional information
Contract 3 months with the potential to transfer to a permanent contract
Based: Northcliffe House, 2 Derry Street, London, W8 5TT
Hours: 37.5 per week
Salary Up to £32,000
