Federal Computer Week is seeking a talented staff writer to help cover the policies, technologies and strategies that senior federal executives need to successfully navigate the complex world of government business. This individual will be an integral part of a highly collaborative editorial team, reporting and writing on both the latest news and big-picture trends.
Responsibilities:
•Cover industry and government events, newsmaker appearances and other spot news throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, filing an average of 7-10 short articles per week
•Cultivate sources; quickly build up own expertise on the intersection of technology and government
•Research, report and write 2-3 longer pieces each month that get ahead of the story and can drive the conversation on key issues
•Gather and produce data, photos and other content to complement written coverage
•Help conceive and develop story ideas both large and small
Requirements:
•Must be able to hit the ground running, learning the details of beat while producing daily content.
•A minimum of 2 years experience reporting and writing for a print or online news publication is required.
•Proven ability to write clearly and accurately on tight deadlines
•Demonstrated talent for explaining complex stories and issues to a knowledgeable, professional audience
•Superior news judgment and organizational skills
•Capacity to balance both daily and longer-term deadlines for multiple stories and overlapping projects
•Ability to produce high-quality journalism both independently and in close collaboration with FCW colleagues
•Solid understanding of digital media, and its role in both gathering and presenting information
•Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field; demonstrated knowledge of AP style
•Strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity and commitment to continuous improvement
•Experience covering the federal government or technology is preferred, but experience with other trade or professional sectors will be considered
