Further information

The Positive, is a new weekly London concept newspaper (print and online) dedicated to unearthing and reporting on visionary, constructive, positive aspects of London/UK life, whilst maintaining a high level of journalistic standards. It offers a constructive, upbeat, intellectually provocative alternative to the gloomy, sensationalistic weekly tabloids that have become a staple in London life. We are currently seeking an experienced full-time news editor to join our team in West London.

The whole concept of this positive newspaper hinges on the news section, so this senior role is pivotal. We are seeking someone with impressive news journalism credentials and experience and relevant degree who also has a keen ability to see the positive or constructive take-away in news stories that others would find far from uplifting.

The news editor will also be a curator of sorts, excavating positive and germane news in the wires and ‘on the streets’. We are not searching for propaganda or hippie feel-good stories. So it is essential that the news editor be a skilled professional journalist who has the ability to see multiple angles of an otherwise straightforward story.

Responsibilities include working with the editorial team to brainstorm relevant AND constructive and upbeat local (and international) news stories, and working closely with the editor-in-chief and deputy editor. He/she will have a strong understanding of local London/UK politics, generalised knowledge of international politics, and a database of professional freelance journalists from which to pull when assigning stories. The news editor is also responsible for editing stories for clarity, focus and factual accuracy and integrity.

As a grass roots startup publication, all of our editorial team members are to some degree multi-tasking. This job is no different. Beyond simple news and politics stories, you will also be responsible for assigning, editing and (if this is your niche) writing topical business stories.

Start date: immediately, as soon as possible.

Please send CV, two published (news) clips, and a short cover letter to Shana Ting Lipton, editor-in-chief, shana@thepositive.com.
