MINING JOURNAL: SUB EDITOR/REPORTER

A permanent position is available, with immediate effect, on the six-person editorial team of the weekly Mining Journal. This subscription-only publication, first published in 1835, is a market leader in the international mining sector, and is one of five mining and engineering titles published in London by Aspermont Media Ltd.

This new position is mainly a subbing role, although there will be some scope for reporting on a regular basis. You will be responsible for editing copy from the Mining Journal team as well as submissions from external contributors.

An eye for detail is essential as is the ability to meet deadlines for both the online and print version of Mining Journal. As part of the editorial team, you will be expected to help deliver a product that is of a high standard in terms of technical accuracy, relevance and clarity.

The reporting aspect is centred on writing news articles for the front pages of the publication. This work entails scanning the media outlets available to the company, desktop research and speaking/meeting with industry figures.

Subject to separate instruction from the editor, you will be expected to make decisions on the material to be covered, and on its relative importance and final page position within the publication.

The successful candidate will be expected to present themselves in a manner that reflects credit on the publication.

Practical experience of geology and/or reporting on the mining sector is not a requirement, but some knowledge will be a distinct advantage.

Employment terms: Normal office hours 9am to 5.30pm, with one hour for lunch; 25-days paid annual holiday plus usual Bank Holidays. There is a probation period of three months, then an annual review.
Starting salary: £30,000
