The Austin American-Statesman is looking to hire an assistant metro editor. The assistant metro editors edit and work closely with a team of staff writers and other assistant metro editors to develop coverage that improves the quality of the newspaper and website. Duties include supervising, editing and developing a team of five reporters; story development; and coordinating with photography, graphics, online and other newsroom departments on coverage. The job calls for working with the local editor to make personnel decisions, manage resources and achieve expectations for the local news desk.
The ideal candidate would have at least five years of journalism experience, including reporting experience, would have strong writing and editing skills, would be familiar with Central Texas communities and would be a reliable, enthusiastic contributor to daily and enterprise story planning. Assistant city editors are required to handle copy efficiently and accurately and typically work with several stories a day. They need the ability to jump on breaking news – i.e. assess the news, delegate reporting duties, coordinate with graphics and photo, etc. The job calls for someone who can motivate reporters to do their best work and who can communicate their story planning to others in the newsroom in a timely fashion. Requires some weekend and off-hour availability.
