Thomson Reuters is the leading source of intelligent information for the world’s businesses and professionals. We combine industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial and risk, legal, tax and accounting, intellectual property and science and media markets, powered by the world’s most trusted news organization.
Reuters is looking for a strong, dynamic all-rounder for the role of Bureau Chief Egypt, Sudan and North Africa.
The successful candidate will lead a hectic news file and manage a large team of correspondents covering Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco at a time of unprecedented upheaval with global political, economic and security implications.
Egypt, Tunisia and Libya have been among the top global stories over the past five years after Arab Spring uprisings swept away long-established autocratic rulers. Since then the “Arab Spring” has withered, with the military in power in Egypt and Islamic State on the rise in Libya and Tunisia. With these countries’ economies in crisis and insecurity growing, the turbulent transition from 30 years of authoritarian rule has momentous implications for the Arab world, Europe and the United States.
Running the busy Cairo bureau, which includes the Arabic news service, is one of the most challenging and exciting assignments in the Middle East.
Running North Africa will require someone with the persistence and skill with contacts to dig through thick walls of official secrecy, the sense of camaraderie to motivate our experienced multi-media Maghreb teams, and the experience to manage our work in the hostile environment of Libya.
He or she will have to be able to anchor and write the big picture story with flair and fluency, capturing the human impact of fast-moving events as well as their political and economic significance, and produce original longer-form enterprise in-depth pieces.
He/she will have strong news judgement, and the editing and mentoring skills to hone the work of less experienced colleagues. He/she will have a cool head, good judgement and the instinctive leadership skills to resolve editorial issues on the spot.
This job is ideal for a strong news leader and writer equally comfortable with spearheading political, economic and corporate news and who can write with authority across the file.
- Set the agenda for coverage and manage a large multi-media team.
- A track record of journalistic excellence, anchor/write the big-picture pieces and investigative stories, knowledge of the region as well as strong contacts. This post has the responsibility of keeping Reuters ahead on a highly competitive and complex story.
- Connecting the dots between politics and the economics is critical for clients who are already exposed or investors seeking opportunities.
- The Bureau Chief must inspire and she/he will have to lead from the front and prioritise news coverage, while making sure that our reporting adheres to our core Trust Principles.
- Arabic is desirable but not essential. French would be a definite asset.
