Do you think it is a national disgrace that in England and Wales, two women a week are killed by their partner or ex-partner? Or that one woman in every four will experience domestic violence at some point during her life?

Do you want to work for an organisation that provides a voice for abused women, and plays a vital role in ensuring that life-saving services are in place to support them? If so, then this may be the perfect role for you.

Refuge is the country’s largest provider of specialist services for victims of all forms of gender-based violence.

Every day we support over 5,000 women and children in our national network of services. We advise Government and lobby to keep violence against women and girls high on the public agenda.

We run award-winning prevention and public education campaigns, managing a busy press office and website, and we are an accredited training provider.

Refuge is committed to a world where domestic and other gender violence is not tolerated and where women and children can live in safety. We aim to empower women and children to rebuild their lives, free from violence and fear.

As Refuge’s first ever head of communications, media and campaigns, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing an ambitious communications strategy which will ensure Refuge is the leading voice in the violence against women and girls arena.

Refuge is the UK’s largest single provider of specialist domestic violence services, providing life-saving support to women and children escaping domestic violence.

Refuge supports over 5,000 women and children a day through personalised support plans, women’s refuges, a national 24- hour helpline and independent domestic violence advocates. Refuge also runs powerful, award-winning campaigns to raise awareness of domestic violence and reach out to abused women and children.

Driven and self-motivated, with exemplary writing skills for a variety of audiences and a substantial track record in media relations, this postholder will develop and deliver an ambitious media and campaigns strategy.

Finding innovate ways to communicate Refuge’s violence against women and girls messages, you will establish and grow key relationships with journalists and bloggers in your efforts to maximise PR and media exposure.

You will have previous experience of reactive and proactive media activity, as well as extensive experience of running major awareness raising campaigns, alongside generating mass media coverage through different channels.

Able to work under tight deadlines, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellent leadership and management skills, with the gravitas and credibility to build communication opportunities for Refuge.

This is a career-defining opportunity for a talented communications expert who is committed to the feminist principles of empowerment and equality that underpin Refuge’s work. This postholder will make an enormous difference to the lives of thousands of women and children across the country.

Refuge is proud to be a leader in its field and an employer of choice with leading edge systems for supervision, quality management and development. Other benefits include 28 days holiday, pension scheme, an employee assistance programme and a childcare voucher scheme.
