Thomson Reuters, UK Banking Correspondent
Reuters is looking for an ambitious and experienced journalist who wants to make a name for themselves on the competitive UK banking beat, based in London.
The successful candidate will help lead coverage of how Britain’s decision to leave the EU will affect one of its most successful industries and London’s status as one of the world’s pre-eminent financial sector hubs.
Britain’s top banks are emerging from years of restructuring, thousands of job cuts, massive fines for mis-selling and misconduct, a string of capital increases and a bitter public backlash on pay and taxpayer-funded bailouts.
We need someone who can hit the ground running and keep Reuters ahead of key developments in the industry at a critical juncture, just months before Brexit day and with a slowing economic backdrop holding back further interest rate rises from record low levels.
Major Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
We need a confident team player, with a strong track record of breaking news and building high-quality contacts as well as the ability to spot trends and generate innovative story ideas.
You’ll be responsible for landing scoops and filing agenda-setting analyses on a rich variety of themes, including the fallout from Brexit, the UK government plans to recoup taxpayer cash from the sale of its RBS stake, and the rise of fledgling banks and fintech companies aiming to revolutionise Britain’s banking landscape.
You need to be a strong writer capable of filing quickfire alerts and slick copy on results days, as well as polished, authoritative initiative stories that unpick complex financial market issues and resonate with dotcom readers and media clients as well as an expert audience.
As part of a broader UK Financial Services team based in Reuters’ UK headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf, you will be expected to co-ordinate closely with the London-based European Regulation correspondent and the UK Government & Economics team in the UK bureau and share some duties on a busy financials file spanning white-collar crime, investment and insurance. You will also need to coordinate with other financial correspondents in European and U.S. bureaus on regional and global stories.
Technical / Professional Skills & Competencies:

- Journalism experience covering banking and finance
- Ability to write with accuracy and speed in accordance with Reuters standards, and to explain complex issues in a way that works for both an audience of experts from financial markets and Reuters media clients
- Excellent news judgment and contact-building skills
- Proven ability to generate initiative ideas and turn them into wire-ready stories
- Strong team player with good planning and coordination skills
- Multimedia skills a plus
- Familiarity with accounting and bank capital rules
