Job Description

Reuters is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic reporter to cover oil and gas companies in the Middle East.

The successful candidate will need to develop superb contacts with sources at energy companies ranging from Saudi oil giant Aramco to oil majors Shell and BP to break news, spot fresh trends in the industry and generate regular analysis along with ambitious, investigative stories.

Role Summary

The reporter will be expected to build sourcing among key industry decision-makers, including top executives at oil firms as well as the buy-side - investors and hedge funds.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to the wider energy team effort to break stories on the impending IPO of Aramco sometime this or next year.

Main responsibilities

In addition to covering oil companies, the successful candidate will also help cover OPEC and energy supply/demand trends in the Middle East. S/he would also regularly collaborate with correspondents in Europe, Asia and North America. Attention to detail, ability to read and understand financial statements such P&L and balance sheets, ability or aptitude to learn to use Excel and proficiency with graphics are required.

Key relationships:

Work with Reuters’ colleagues around the world on global energy stories. Build contact with sources and stakeholders in EMEA energy markets.

Essential skills:

  • Strong news judgement and writing skills
  • Proven ability to build sources and break stories
  • Fluent Arabic, English


Desired skills:

  • Ability to read and analyse P&L and balance sheets
  • Ability to explain complex markets to a wide business audience
  • Experience using data and analytical tools to highlight trends


Education:

  • Diploma in journalism would be an advantage but is not a requirement​
