IFLScience is a science website with over 25 million fans on Facebook. We're currently looking for a Social Media Assistant for 6 months family leave cover.

We’re looking for someone who truly understands social media and what audiences want. You’ll be working with our team of journalists and scientists to package their work into something understandable by a general audience. You’ll need fantastic communication skills and a knack for writing excellent titles.

The other part of this role will be writing - you’ll be responsible for coming up with and writing articles that generate traffic to our website, so you’ll need to have your finger on the viral pulse.

In this post you'll have the chance to have your work seen by millions of people worldwide, and gain experience managing social media channels for a large audience media organisation.

Responsibilities:

Day to day you will be managing our social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You'll publish articles from the team, writing captions and retitling articles where necessary. You'll also create articles of your own, and make interesting, informative and engaging content, and adapt it to each platform.

You'll also keep a lookout for interesting science stories, with a focus on articles that will perform well on Facebook in terms of clicks and shares.

Experience

You don't need a science degree, but you do need to be passionately interested in the topic and comfortable writing about a wide variety of subjects.

If you devour David Attenborough documentaries and love talking about CERN's latest findings, you'll fit right in. You don't have to understand everything (no one does), but you should be interested and excited to learn. We don’t need you to write an article about black holes (we have astrophysicists for that!) but you should be able to read the article, understand it and come up with an exciting title for it.

You should have a knack for reading articles, finding out what's interesting about them, and then condensing that information into a fun, concise and intriguing title that will make people want to read the article.

Essential

  • Journalism experience. Can be degree or practical (e.g. writing for a university paper or other online platform)
  • Knowledge of and passion for science
  • Ability to spot a good story that people will want to read, and create a great headline to hook readers in
  • A keen interest in social media trends (you could have your own twitter account with a sizeable following, or many viral tweets, or have managed a social media page for another organization)

Desirable

  • Experience managing a social media page where articles are published
  • Experience writing articles for a media organisation, preferably a science website
  • Experience running a large social media page.
  • Proficient in Photoshop or similar photo-editing software

To apply, please send a cover letter, CV and two writing samples by completing the application form below.
