BAFTA, Press Officer
Reports to: Communications Manager and PR & Learning Campaigns Manager
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is looking for a dynamic and motivated PR professional to manage our internal press office and our regular communications through earned media.
The post will focus on developing engagement amongst our target audiences of: Film, games and television industry; career starters in these industries; educators and partners who share our charitable aims.
BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally.
Through its Awards ceremonies and year-round programme of learning events and initiatives – which includes workshops, masterclasses, scholarships, lectures and mentoring schemes in the UK, USA and Asia – BAFTA identifies and celebrates excellence, discovers, inspires and nurtures new talent, and enables learning and creative collaboration.
- Manage BAFTA’s internal press office, working independently to promote BAFTA activity to traditional press and key online influencers to develop audience engagement and stakeholder buy-in;
- Oversee production of BAFTA’s own editorial content (primarily articles), using BAFTA’s network of experts in order to offer industry insights to key audiences, and syndicating/seeding these to key outlets;
- Monitor and evaluate the reach and impact of press activity.
1. Manage BAFTA’s internal press office, working independently to promote BAFTA activity to traditional press and key online influencers to develop audience engagement and stakeholder buy-in:
- Draft, issue and sell in press releases, developing story angles and pitch ideas to target media;
- Manage regular communications with key press contacts who cover BAFTA events and initiatives;
- Respond to media enquiries around BAFTA’s Awards, events and initiatives;
- Work with key staff to prepare press statements;
- Expand and maintain the media contacts database;
- Regularly liaise with BAFTA’s external PR agencies and co-ordinate campaign activity;
- Prepare internal briefing documents for executive team and senior management, managing distribution and updating where required;
- Draft speeches and other copy for spokespeople;
- Liaise with the PR contacts of BAFTA’s partners and contributors on joint activity;
- Provide PR support at BAFTA events, including Awards ceremonies.
2. Overseeing production of BAFTA’s own editorial content (primarily articles), using BAFTA’s network of experts in order to offer industry insights to key audiences, and syndicating/seeding these to key outlets:
- Work with PR & Learning Campaigns Manager to develop feature and interview opportunities for staff and industry experts to amplify campaign messages;
- Work with Learning & New Talent team on production of editorial content addressing topical industry issues, commissioning freelance writers where appropriate;
- Develop relationships with target media to distribute features content;
- Help prepare briefs for external suppliers.
3. Monitor and evaluate the reach and impact of press activity:
- Monitor press coverage of BAFTA, including awards activity, events and learning initiatives, flagging potential or real issues with the Communications and PR & Campaigns managers, saving cuttings and compiling reports where required
- Provide audience insights and analysis and compile reports, while assessing effectiveness of media monitoring services and making recommendations on services to Communications Officer, Marketing
- Evaluate the impact of activity and identify means of improvement
- Relevant experience in a press office environment (in-house or agency) handling press enquiries, writing press materials and pitching news stories;
- Experience of creating story angles and pitch angles which demonstrate an understanding of public relations strategy;
- Experience of overseeing the production of content tailored for target audiences;
- Experience of working independently, maintaining a proactive approach to tasks, and demonstrating initiative;
- Good time management skills;
- First-hand knowledge of contact management databases and online media monitoring services;
- A demonstrable interest in the film, television and games industries;
- Good research skills and ability to present information in a coherent manner;

- Excellent oral and written communication in English.
